A Partnership with Music Will & Sweetwater
Sometimes, the difference between a child drifting and a child discovering who they are comes down to something surprisingly tangible: the power of an instrument in their hands.
This year, with the generous sponsorship of Sweetwater, we are proud to launch our annual Instrument Fund campaign rooted in a powerful truth: access changes everything. When students have the instruments they need, possibilities open. Music programs are born where none existed before. Teachers can say “yes” instead of “maybe someday.” And young people begin to see themselves not just as students, but as musicians—with futures worth believing in.
At Music Will, we’ve always known that talent is universal, but opportunity is not. Too often, students are eager to participate in music programs but are held back by cost. School budgets are stretched thin. Families are doing everything they can. And without instruments, even the most passionate teacher can only go so far.
Our Instrument Fund exists to change that.
Through this partnership with Sweetwater—and with the support of our donor community—we are putting instruments directly into schools and classrooms with the greatest need. In many cases, these instruments don’t just support an existing program; they make it possible to launch one for the very first time. They turn empty rooms into rehearsal spaces. They turn curiosity into commitment. They turn “I might try music” into “this is who I am.”
Eduardo’s Story: Finding Himself Through Music
Eduardo’s journey shows us what that access can mean.
By eighth grade, Eduardo was struggling to find his footing—unsure of who he was or where he was headed. A school suspension became a moment of pause, forcing him to choose between continuing down a difficult path or changing course. Music became that alternative. That focus. That hope.
But there was a barrier standing in the way.
Eduardo needed an upright bass—an essential requirement to audition for a respected music program—but his family couldn’t afford one. Like so many students, he was at risk of missing a life-changing opportunity not because of talent or effort, but because of access.
That’s when his teacher stepped in.
Jennifer Theilacker saw something in Eduardo that he was only beginning to see in himself. She pushed him when it was hard. She believed in him when it mattered most. And she moved mountains to make sure he didn’t lose his chance—never giving up on him, even when the odds were stacked high.
When an upright bass was finally placed in Eduardo’s hands, the shift was immediate.
“I’m a bass player,” Eduardo says now. “That’s who I am.”
Music didn’t just give Eduardo an instrument. It gave him identity, purpose, and a future he could imagine. It changed the atmosphere in his home. It inspired his siblings. It opened doors that once felt firmly closed.
